Hip-hop guide

Posted on February 2, 2007 by Melissa Worden

This project kept me busy at the end of this week.

Sarasota has an older population, so the reporter, Steve Echeverria Jr., and print designers, Tony Elkins and Michelle Greene, and I had some fun with introducing hip-hop culture to our readers.

My wish list for this project:

> More time; being last in the production line makes for quite a bit of unnecessary stress.

> Audio clips to embed on our site; if I had more time I would have gathered the audio and put them in the page rather than linking out to another site.

> A way to embed the YouTube videos in Flash (not just HTML) so the clips could be integrated with the package. As far as I can tell, this can’t be done.

> More audio/video clips so each entry has a sample.

Feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Overall, a nice design that loads quickly. Not too crazy about the font used for the tabs. I know you were after a funky look but I find it a bit difficult to read. But maybe that’s just me.

Under ‘must have albums’ I clicked on the ‘play’ button and got nothing. I thought I would hear an audio clip. However, I quickly figured out that it wasn’t an audio clip. Under the ‘on film’ I did the same thing but then saw the ‘watch track’ at the bottom of the screen.

Overall, I think you and your team have done an excellent job - especially given the time constraints you were under.

What I really like is how you have incorporated what is out there in the public domain (i.e. YouTube videos etc…) into your multimedia project.

We don’t have to create everything ourselves. It’s possible to link to video, text, photos, audio etc… created by other people. That represents a huge savings in time.

I hadn’t thought about doing that before I saw your project.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

    John

Doh! And I just wrote about how I didn’t like LATimes.com setting me up to see a YouTube video and it only being a graphic.

I’ll have to definitely keep this in mind in the future.

Thanks so much for the feedback, John.
